English Green Building Seminar

Spring 2006

Arch 404/504 English Green Building seminar

During spring term at UI, students will do basic research on green building in the UK and will help plan the itinerary for the studies abroad program. During the seminar all the logistical preparations for studies abroad will be discussed. This preparation seminar is intended to maximize the students’ experience in the UK.

UI Studies Abroad has set up a web page with pertinent information and the Architecture London Program application, which is due by February 10.

The studies abroad offering, Arch 404/504 Green Architecture in UK

A 6-credit elective commencing May 24, 2006 and ending June 16, 2006. Students will visit sites; interview architects, engineers, and educators; and develop building case studies based on their first-hand experience and research. The culminating event of the course will be attendance at the Eco-Architecture 2006 Conference (June 14–16) at Wessex Institute, Ashurst Lodge, New Forest near South Hampton, UK. This conference brings together leaders of the sustainable architecture movement from all over the world. See http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2006/eco-arch06.

London lodging

In London the students will be housed at the International Students House near Regents Park. This lodging arrangement allows students to meet their peers from all over the world and is central to transit, trains, and significant green architecture projects and people (Arup's and Grimshaw’s offices are within blocks). The cost is nominal—about $600/student for the 22 days in London. See http://www.ish.org.uk/.

Cost

Since the program begins in May, students will be able get the lowest fare airline tickets (~$800 from Moscow). So, in spite of the high cost of London, the trip should be quite affordable. London lodging (including continental breakfast) and all instructional costs will be included in the course fee. Students will be responsible for all transportation—airfare, trains, the tube—and meals as well as field trip lodging costs. All the public museums in London and the UK are free. See budget page.
