Arch 556
 Graduate Project

Spring 2008

Instructor: Bruce Haglund <bhaglund@uidaho.edu>

Course Requirements

Two products are required—a comprehensive design project and a project description booklet. The approximate weighting of the components is 66% design project and 33% project booklet. You cannot earn a passing grade without submitting a booklet.

Carbon Neutral Design. Our department has voted unanimously to adopt the Architecture 2010 Imperative. It demands that for each studio project "the design engage the environment in a way that dramatically reduces or eliminates the need for fossil fuel." With that in mind, your presentation and book should show evidence of carbon emission reduction.

Comprehensive Design Project. It takes at least seventeen drawings to describe a comprehensive project. The level of detail required is greatest for a small project, while the larger projects demonstrate greater breadth. The final project should demonstrate the full range of skills and issues developed during your architectural education. The final critique will be scheduled as a one-hour session for each student. Faculty and visiting architecture practitioners will be assigned to your critique, but you may also invite guest critics of your choice...clients, uncle architect, Renzo Piano, etc. During the semester four other interim critiques are scheduled. Participation in each of these is mandatory.

Project Description Booklet. The project booklet should fully describe the research, rationale, program, process, and design solution for your project. The materials developed in Arch 510 provide the basis of this booklet, but are not in themselves sufficient. The booklet should be well-written and comprehensive. The design solution should be described in both words and graphics. Both a hard copy and a CD are required. Save all your graphic files and other information of interest as well as your booklet (in PDF format) to the CD.
