1 Most currently available processor speeds work well with the up to date software.  A fast system is a balance between the speed of the processor, the amount of system memory, the video chipset/video ram and hard drive speed.
2 The single Core Duo processor contains two execution cores, and it is optimized for multitasking and multi-threaded applications.

Video Chipset • It is recommended that you specify video chipsets that use dedicated RAM.  A number of integrated video chipsets rely entirely on shared system RAM, these chipsets are not recommended.

University of Idaho VMobile Plan

The University of Idaho has an optional notebook leasing plan available to UI students.  We suggest that you consider VMobile as you evaluate your options. Included as a part of the VMobile lease is:

  • On-Campus technical support
  • A loaner program in case your technical issue cannot repaired in a timely manner.
  • Theft and Damage Insurance
  • 2 Year Lease (4 consecutive semesters) with a buy-out option
  • Software included with each system includes:
    • Windows Vista (for Lenovo systems)
    • Mac OSX (For Macintosh systems)
    • Microsoft Office
    • Symantec Anti-Virus

Software
Operating System • Windows XP Professional, SP2 - Suggested (Provides the best compatibility for connecting to the supplied network printing and storage resources.)
• Windows Vista Business
• 64 Bit versions of Windows XP or Vista are NOT recommended. (Not all of the software we use is 64 bit compatible.  If you want to use a 64 bit OS, please ensure that all of the software you will be using is compliant.)
• The HOME versions of Windows XP or Vista are NOT recommended.
• Please note, not all of the software that is utilized by the VTD students is fully compliant with Vista, at this time.
Security • Virus Protection (highly recommended)
• Personal Firewall (highly recommended)
• Spyware Protection (recommended)

Microsoft Office • As a part of the University's Microsoft Campus Agreement, University of Idaho students will be licensed to download and use MS Window Upgrades (must already own a copy of Windows to receive upgrades - and upgrades to Windows XP only at this time) and the latest versions of MS Office (Mac Office Professional and Windows Office Enterprise versions). Due to the Microsoft Campus Agreement, access to this software is provided at no extra cost to students.
