Software Security Options

Being online while attached to the networks in the design studios (or elsewhere at the university) opens the computer system to attack by viruses and hacking by unscrupulous individuals.  Therefore it is recommended that each student acquire and maintain virus protection, spyware protection and a personal firewall application.  Please note, if a student's computer is infected or compromised, and, is subsequently causing problems on the network, the data port assigned to the student may be locked out until such time that the student has disinfected & secured their computer.

Example Applications
Virus Protection
Personal Firewall
  • Microsoft's Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).  This is the Microsoft XP built-in firewall.  We recommend that you turn this option on unless you acquire another firewall product.
  • Apple's Mac OS built0in firewall. We recommend that you turn this option on unless you acquire another firewall product.
  • Zone Alarm
  • Norton Personal Firewall
  • Mcafee Personal Firewall
