Students to Attend National ASLA 2007 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
More
than 50 students from the Landscape Architecture Department will be attending
the ASLA National Annual Meeting this coming October 5-9. The students and their
faculty will take part in a department bus tour of San Francisco on Friday
October 5 - made possible by a very generous contribution from the
Idaho/Montana Chapter ASLA. Thank you Idaho/Montana ASLA ExCom.
The UI has a New Dean!
The College of Art and Architecture selected Mark
Hoversten as the new dean of the college. Dean Hoversten is the former
director of the landscape architecture program a the University of Las Vegas.
The Department of Landscape Architecture is proud to have Mr. Hoversten as
professor in the department.
Elizabeth Graff Joins the Faculty
We are excited to announce that a new faculty member has joined us this
autumn. Elizabeth Graff rose to the top of a talented pool of candidates
in a competitive national search. She comes to us with excellent skills
in teaching, planning and landscape architectural construction. This year
she will develop her research agenda and teach a full compliment of courses
including site planning, grading and drainage, and Junior design studio.
The College Retreat Focuses on National Recognition
All faculty in the College of Art and Architecture met for a goal setting
session facilitated by Dean Mark Hoversten. Progress toward achieving
strategic planning goals set a year ago was reviewed. Brain storming
sessions addressed the development of the University of Idaho Research and
Design Center in Boise and the new interdisciplinary Master's program called the
Building Sustainable Communities Initiative.
Professor Graff Presents
Paper at CELA
Assistant Professor, Elizabeth Graff presented a
community planning paper to the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture.
Hosted by Pennsylvania State University, the paper entitled "Green Map Exercises
as an Avenue for Project Based Learning" was presented August 14, 2007.
The paper described a project involving inter-city youth (kindergarten though
twelfth grade) who learned to map their environment and inform planning efforts.
Seniors Will Design Sandpoint Campus
During the fall semester the senior design students in landscape architecture
will explore site design alternatives for the existing master plan for the proposed University of Idaho branch campus
in Sandpoint, Idaho. The students will follow the master plan alternatives with design
development and construction documents for campus focus areas. Professor
Stephen Drown and Assoc. Professor Gary Austin will offer the two eight week
long courses to complete the project.
