The four-year BLA professional program is the only landscape architecture program in the State of Idaho and is full accredited by The American Society of Landscape Architects. The Department of Landscape Architecture offers the professional Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) Degree, as well as A Master of Science, Landscape Architecture (MSLA) degree.

The BLA Professional Degree Program

Students begin the program in their first year with introductory lecture courses and planting design studios. Studios in the following three years engage the student in several aspects of landscape architecture including: site suitability analysis, design process and critical thinking, design theory, sustainable design best practices, interdisciplinary community design and planning, applied landscape ecology, environmental psychology, riparian and wetlands design, open space planning, as well as master planning, design development and construction documents processes. Students in their final fourth year studio complete a case study of a significant landscape architectural project and apply their research to an undergraduate thesis.

Other program courses in landscape graphics, landscape construction, stormwater design, irrigation and water conservation, geographic information science (GIS), computer aided design (CAD), professional practice and landscape architecture history and theory are integrated into the design studio experience, providing tools and context for design projects. Additional required electives in architecture, art, sociology, psychology, engineering, ecology, biology, soils and geology further enhance the student’s professional undergraduate education.

Several unique opportunities are available to students in the BLA degree program:

• The department maintains articulation agreements  with several two- year landscape horticulture and landscape technology programs enabling students from these colleges once admitted to the University of Idaho to transfer into the BLA program at the completion of their program.

 • Qualified transfer students who enter the undergraduate program with a four-year baccalaureate degree in another discipline may apply for the three-year The Three-year BLA/MSLA Degree Option. All other qualified students may apply for an additional one-year,30 credit hour MSLA degree.

 • Students have the opportunity to participate in the department’s Summer Study Abroad Program at Casa Wallace in Cremolino, Italy. This six week, 11-credit hour program may be used as a substitute for one of the third year studios and a required urban theory course.

• A number of landscape architecture courses are divided into eight-week, half semester courses to provide the student more flexibility in scheduling.

• The Department of Landscape Architecture has an established tradition in GIS and provides opportunities for advanced GIS applications in regional and community planning.

• Landscape Architecture History (LArc 389) can be taken as a distance-learning course in the summer session.

• All BLA landscape architecture majors are required to take part in two field trips in the third and fourth year of the program. These three to five day trips are usually to Northwest cites such as Portland, Seattle and San Francisco. Students tour nationally significant landscape architectural sites and visit the offices of some of the finest landscape architecture firms in the world.  Often one of these trips is substituted by a visit to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) national conference when the meeting is held in the western region of the country.

 • The majority of studio projects serve as the core of the department’s OUTREACH mission with students collaborating with professionals and University of Idaho architecture students on design and planning projects for communities in the state and region.

• Faculty work with students to assist them in finding summer internships with public agencies and private firms.

• Qualified BLA degree students may take up to nine additional credit hours of graduate electives in their fourth year of the program and use these towards a One-year 30 credit MSLA degree.

The Master of Science in Landscape Architecture Program

The Master of Science in Landscape Architecture (MSLA) is a specialty degree administered in partnership with Washington State University Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture  and the Washington State University Interdisciplinary Design Institute in Spokane Washington. Students have the option of pursuing a one-year thirty credit hour degree or a forty credit hour two-year degree. This program focuses on the role of the bioregional and cultural landscape as determinates in landscape architecture research and practice. The program also provides opportunities for advanced training in GIS and other computer assisted modeling and visualization technologies.

Qualified students must meet the minimum GPA requirements of the University of Idaho and may apply for admission online:

The Three-Year BLA/MSLA Degree Option

Qualified students with baccalaureate degrees from other disciplines may be admitted to the professional BLA degree program, apply to the 30 credit hour MSLA degree program during their second year and receive both degrees at the end of three years. Depending on the applicants undergraduate degree the student may have deficiencies in math, science and art that need to be fulfilled as part of their curriculum. Other students may already have completed a number of the required undergraduate courses. These factors may impact the length of the students program
