LArc 364 Landscape Architecture Summer Studio: An intermediate level landscape architecture
design studio exploring the relationships between urban form, community and the landscape

and landscapes of the Piedmont region of northern Italy provide an excellent context for

economic sustainability. (Landscape Architecture students may elect to substitute this studio
for either LArc 356/357, LArc 361/362 or a 6-credit combination any of two of these four, 8-week studios.

the Italian hill town as a resource for understanding the foundations and morphology of urban form
and the relationship between landscape and community. Students will attend lectures and take three
extended field trips to Piedmont, Liguria, Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, visiting significant cities
such as Lucca, Florence, Siena, Genoa, Milan, Cinque Terre and Rome in addition to a number of hill
towns noted for their place in the history of the Italian landscape.
LArc 382 The Italian Experience: Landscape, Language and Tradition: This course emphasizes the
relationship between the regional landscape, language and sense of place. Students will study
the Italian language under the tutelage of an Italian language instructor, utilizing the institutions,
hill towns, gardens, historic sites and markets of the regional Piedmont communities of Ovada,
Cremolino and Acqui Terme as a source for developing beginning Italian language skills. Students
will also receive weekly instruction from experts in the historical traditions of regional Italian cuisine.
